Most people agree with the U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion and they don’t favor defunding Planned Parenthood, a key goal of congressional Republicans, according to a poll released Friday.
The poll by Quinnipiac University was released the same day as the annual March for Life, a gathering of tens of thousands of anti-abortion activists that featured remarks from Vice President Mike Pence.
The poll found that 70 percent of Americans said they favored the Roe decision versus 26 percent who opposed it.
Another 64 percent of respondents say abortion should be legal in either all cases (28 percent) or most cases (36 percent). The poll found that 22 percent say abortion should be illegal in most cases and 9 percent say abortion should be fully illegal.
Voters also were asked about defunding women’s health and abortion provider Planned Provider, with 62 percent opposing any cuts and 31 percent supporting cuts.
The question made no mention of abortion.
Quinnipiac asked a follow-up question if those polled knew that the federal funding would be used only for non-abortion health issues such breast cancer screenings and if they still supported cutting funding.
The result was that 80 percent opposed the cuts and 12 percent were in favor of them.
The women’s health and abortion provider receives about $500 million a year in federal funds. However, Republicans have repeatedly sought to strip that funding after a controversial undercover video showed Planned Parenthood discussing the donation and harvesting of aborted fetal tissue.
The provider was not charged with any crimes after multiple state investigations.
The group is prohibited from using any federal funding for abortion procedures per the Hyde Amendment, a rider added to spending bills for decades. The House recently voted Tuesday to pass a bill that made the amendment permanent, but it won’t be taken up in the Senate due to Democratic opposition.
Quinnipiac surveyed 1,190 voters across the country, and the poll had a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
