Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gushed about his wife Callista Gingrich Monday after she was confirmed by the Senate to be the United States’ representative to the Vatican.
“I’m so proud of Callista and we’re, frankly, grateful to the president for nominating her to be the ambassador to the Vatican,” Gingrich told Fox News about his third wife.
Gingrich, who met his wife in 1993 when he was House Minority Whip and she was a staffer for Rep. Steve Gunderson, said she “very excited by the opportunity” to serve the country as an envoy.
“She realizes how big a challenge it’s going to be,” he added. “If you are the communications bridge between Pope Francis and President Trump, you’re going to have a really big job and she knows she’s going to have to work hard.”
Callista Gingrich was confirmed to the position in a 70-23 vote Monday.
