Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee does not think Dr. Anthony Fauci should testify in front of Congress about his role as part of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
Speaking with Fox News host Harris Faulkner on Tuesday, Huckabee dismissed the idea of allowing officials of the coronavirus task force the opportunity to testify concerning President Trump’s response because of how Democrats might use it to undermine him.
“If you take conversations, candid conversations that a president can have with the people surrounding him, and you start having politically charged, hateful people like exist in the Democrat House just trying to expose it and cause trouble in the midst of a pandemic, presidents will never surround themselves with people like Dr. Fauci again. That’s the danger that we would face.”
Huckabee commended Fauci for not being a “shrinking violet” and claimed that the infectious disease expert has been given plenty of opportunities to voice any concerns he may have with the way the White House has responded to the coronavirus crisis.
Huckabee also warned that by allowing House Democrats to cross-examine Trump’s response through Fauci and other state officials would limit transparency between top administrators in the future.
“The reason that Dr. Fauci shouldn’t go and testify to Congress is because the conversations and discussions that he has had with the president are in the executive branch, where they should remain,” Huckabee said.
On April 2, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the creation of the House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis, which will be used to investigate the president’s response to the pandemic. House Leader Kevin McCarthy said the committee was “redundant” because of oversight protection written into the $2 trillion economic relief bill passed in late March.
Huckabee warned against allowing Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff, who led the House inquiry into Trump’s impeachment, the opportunity to investigate Trump again.
“The president is not going to trot these people off to Congress so that they can get skewered by the likes of Adam Schiff.”
