Report: Trump Keeps Comey

The New York Times is reporting that President Donald Trump will keep James Comey on as FBI Director for the foreseeable future.

The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, told his top agents from around the country that he had been asked by President Trump to stay on the job running the federal government’s top law enforcement agency, according to people familiar with the matter. A decision to retain Mr. Comey would spare the president another potentially bruising confirmation battle. It also would keep Mr. Comey at the center of the F.B.I.’s investigation into several Trump associates and their potential ties with the Russian government.

The Times reports that Comey made the announcement during a weekly conference call with senior employees last Wednesday, two days before the president’s inauguration.

During a Blue Room ceremony honoring first responders last Sunday, President Trump made special mention of Comey and, according to the New York Post, gave the FBI Director a “prolonged handshake and whispered in his ear, before proclaiming, “he’s become more famous than me.”

When Comey decided not to pursue criminal charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last July, Trump criticized the decision, and Comey, via Twitter.

The Inspector General of the Justice Department is investigating Comey’s handling of the investigation into Clinton and her use of an unauthorized, non-government email server during her tenure at the State Department.
