Social media is helping connect young people to Pope’s visit

Everybody knows that Pope Francis is coming to the United States this week. During his time here he will visit Washington, D.C., New York, and Philadelphia.

Those who want to be part of the experience but cannot be there person have a chance through social media. There is such an effort known as the “Pope is Hope Social Listening Center.” Users can connect through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. There are also options available through Snapchat at @PopeIsHopeUS and through Vine at @PopeIsHope. There is even a Pope Emoji app available. Aleteia, a Catholic media outlet, is behind the project.

The social media accounts have been active, both in the amount of posts and followers as they track the pope’s visit. They’ve also made quite the use of the emojis.

Pope Francis himself has also become a fan of reaching people through social media. Business Insider and Fortune have also noticed and reported on the pope’s visit and how he has used Twitter and taken selfies.

Media outlets have taken note of the visit and the involvement of social media in one form or another. This includes an extensive piece from NPR. TIME, People, USA Today and International Business Times also did reporting.
