Saturday: Bethesda’s Play in a Day at Imagination Stage
Their challenge, should they choose to accept it, is to create a short, one-act play in 24 hours.
This Saturday, six local theater companies will put their skills to the test as part of Bethesda Urban Partnership’s annual Play in a Day program.
“You don’t know what to expect,” said Stephanie Coppula, director of marketing and communications for the Bethesda Urban Partnership.
On Friday at 8 p.m., playwrights from competing companies will be told what this year’s theme is and given a prop. They have 12 hours until the script must be turned in at 8 a.m. Saturday, and then 12 hours of rehearsal before showtime at 8 p.m. that same day.
This year’s participating companies include American Ensemble Theatre, Adventure Theatre MTC, Imagination Stage, Flying V, Keegan Theatre and Olney Theatre Center.
Each one-act play must be between 10 and 12 minutes and use no more than four actors. Props from previous years include feather dusters and orange cones.
“We try to come up with things that are visually interesting and you wouldn’t know what to do with,” Coppula said. “What we love to see is how they include it.”
Prizes are awarded for best writing, directing, acting and use of prop.
Coppula said Play in a Day is a way for the public to see works from six different companies in on night.
“The goal is the creative process,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
