I-395 ramp gets environmental approval

Virginia will break ground next spring on the $80 million ramp on Interstate 395 designed to alleviate traffic congestion generated by the Mark Center in Alexandria, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Wednesday.

The ramp’s environmental assessment was approved by the Federal Highway Administration, so state officials need only one more approval before they can start looking for a contractor. Officials expect to receive that approval.

The ramp would open in the summer of 2015.

Officials decided to the build the ramp after the Pentagon moved thousands of defense workers to the Mark Center in Alexandria, increasing the number of commuters on already clogged roads.
