House Republicans plan to hold a floor vote Wednesday night, despite an ongoing Democratic “sit-in” in the well of the chamber.
“I expect it will be noisy,” Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., told reporters after a closed-door meeting.
Lawmakers leaving the special GOP meeting said the plan is to simply move ahead with votes, including a possible vote this week on a deal to provide emergency federal funding to combat the Zika virus.
Republicans control the floor and can gavel back into session at any time. Democrats are demanding votes on two gun control bills, but Republicans aren’t budging. They have pledged to hold the floor all night and beyond.
The House must vote by midnight on whether to override President Obama’s veto of a GOP-authored bill to block a new rule governing financial advisers. The veto-override resolution is on a special calendar that limits debate and requires two-thirds majority for passage. Those kinds of bills can’t be considered on Thursday or Friday.
The Zika deal is expected by midnight, which would give the House time to consider the measure this week, before lawmakers depart for a week-long recess.
