Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid is proud to be an American citizen.

“I’ve been here for a long time,” Embiid said Thursday while training with the team at the Citadel. “My son is American. I felt like, I’m living here and it’s a blessing to be an American, so I said, why not?”

Embiid, 28, was born in Cameroon and also holds French citizenship. He attended high school in Florida before playing college basketball at the University of Kansas, and he now calls the United States home with his Brazilian girlfriend and 2-year-old son.

Regarding how he will be introduced, Embiid recognized that his three nationalities are going to give announcer Matt Cord a mouthful.

“We’re going to say Cameroon, American, and French,” Embiid said.

However, the country he will represent in international play has yet to be confirmed.

After obtaining citizenship, Embiid said his next goal is a healthy season and a championship ring.

“I just want to be healthy and win a championship and go from there,” he said.
