Lightning strike damages Alexandria home

An Alexandria home was badly damaged when it was struck by lightning.

The Alexandria fire department said the house on the 200 block of Park Road caught fire after it was hit at about 12:20 a.m. Friday. The lightning struck a chimney, then ignited parts of the three-story home as it traveled through the interior walls.

One person was home at the time of the blaze and escaped without harm after a smoke a alarm went off.

Fire officials said the fire caused about $300,000 in damage to the home.
