Private insurers will cover coronavirus testing, Pence says

Vice President Mike Pence said that private insurers will cover the cost of coronavirus testing and telemedicine services for patients.

“I am pleased to report, as you requested, Mr. President, all the insurance companies here today or before today have agreed to waive all co-pays for coronavirus testing and extend coverage for coronavirus treatment in all their benefit plans,” Pence told President Trump in a White House meeting Tuesday with insurance company executives.

Among the Tuesday meeting’s attendees were Gail Boudreaux, president & CEO of Anthem; Dave Wichmann, CEO of UnitedHealth Group; and Bruce Broussard, president and CEO of Humana.

Trump floated government coverage for testing and treatments last week but offered few details other than saying, “We’re looking at that whole situation.”

Pence added that all private insurance CEOs “have also agreed to no surprise billing” for coronavirus patients getting treatment and that the costs of receiving telehealth services would fall to insurers rather than patients.
