The old Soviet airbase in Karshi-Khanabad, Uzbekistan, known as "K2," served as a northern staging point for U.S. troops entering Afghanistan in the wake of the September 11 attacks. It was later discovered to have been a munitions dump and bombed out chemical weapons factory.
