In each case, the cure is potentially worse than the disease. Kim Jong Un knows it, which is why he feels he can get away with escalation. What, then, is the alternative? The alternative is what we have now, and what we have had for seventy years, namely deterrence through the threat of overwhelming retaliation. (Korean Central News Agency/Korea News Service via AP)

Footage emerged last week of masked ruffians beating a man as he writhed on the ground at Berkeley's campus. What had he done? The goons assumed, without evidence, that he was an alt-right supporter, or at least a Trump voter. (Anda Chu /San Jose Mercury News via AP, File)

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson chats with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir before he departs from the Royal Terminal in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 13. Saudi Arabia demanding the closure of Al Jazeera is like China demanding the closure of Fox News. Instead, knowing which buttons to press in the West, they accuse Qatar of promoting jihad. On almost every measure, Western societies have become more tolerant. Racial violence has declined.
