TUCSON, AZ - OCTOBER 20: The CardioWest Temporary Total Artificial heart is shown October, 20, 2004 in Tucson, Arizona. The temporary heart is manufactured by SynCardia Systems of Tucson and was recently approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration as a bridge to transplantation in eligiable patients. Constructed of a polyurethane housing with dacron fabric, the heart is attached to a circulatory support system, weighing approximately 400 pounds, that pumps air through plastic tubes connected to the heart pushing the blood through the patient's body. The University of Arizona Medical Center's Transplant and Artificial Heart program has used the heart in 68 patients. The latest patient, Jim Hill, 46, of Glendale, Arizona has had the heart for eight months while waiting for a donar heart. (Photo by Jeff Topping/Getty Images)
