Two men and a child cross a street as a sign prohibiting the use of marijuana in a designated area, top, is seen in Amsterdam, Wednesday Dec. 12, 2012. Amsterdam’s mayor Eeberhard van der Laan said Wednesday he would formally ban students from smoking marijuana at school as of Jan. 1, 2013, making the the Dutch capital the first city in the Netherlands to do so. Under the ‘tolerance’ principle, marijuana is technically illegal here, but police can’t prosecute people for possession of small amounts. That’s the loophole that made possible Amsterdam’s famed ‘coffee shops’, cafes where marijuana is sold openly. But it has also had the unwanted side effect that Dutch children are frequently exposed to the drug in public areas. (AP Photo/Peter Dejong) News

In this photo provided by the Kroeller-Mueller Museum in Otterlo on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 the 1887 painting "Four sunflowers gone to seed" by Vincent van Gogh is seen. With the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam closed for renovations, the world's second-largest collection of the tortured Dutch master's work is stepping into the limelight. The lesser-known Kroeller-Mueller museum in the eastern Netherlands has revamped the layout of its central rooms, giving more space and focus to many of its top works. Johan Huibers, bottom right, poses, after being asked by a photographer to go outside, with a stuffed tiger in front of the full scale replica of Noah’s Ark in Dordrecht, Netherlands, Monday Dec. 10, 2012. The Ark has opened its doors in the Netherlands after receiving permission to receive up to 3,000 visitors per day. For those who don’t know or remember the Biblical story, God ordered Noah to build a boat massive enough to save animals and humanity while God destroyed the rest of the earth in an enormous flood. In this photograph released by Scheepvaartnieuws.blogspot.nl the Baltic Ace cargo ship is seen in IJmuiden, Netherlands, 2012. Four crew members died and seven were missing in the icy waters of the North Sea, after a cargo ship collided with another vessel and sank off the Dutch coast Wednesday night, rescuers said. The 148-meter (485-foot) Baltic Ace collided with the 134-meter (440-foot) container ship Corvus J in darkness near busy shipping lanes some 65 kilometers (40 miles) off the coast of the southern Netherlands. The Baltic Ace, carrying a cargo of cars, had a crew of 24 which was forced to abandon ship as it sank quickly. In this photo taken Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 persons dressed as "Zwarte Piet" or "Black Pete" attend a parade after St. Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, arrived by boat in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Foreigners visiting the Netherlands in winter are often surprised to see that the Dutch version of St. Nicholas' little helpers resemble a racist caricature of a black person. The overwhelming majority of Dutch, who pride themselves on tolerance, are fiercely devoted to their holiday tradition and say "Zwarte Piet", whose name means "Black Pete", is absolutely harmless, a fictional figure who does not represent any race. But now a growing group of Dutch natives are questioning whether this particular part of the tradition should be changed. (AP Photo/ Margriet Faber) News
