This Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, photo shows a makeshift memorial on the Tule River Indian Reservation near Porterville, Calif. Authorities are piecing together what led a man to kill his mother and two uncles, and shoot his three children before being killed in a shootout with police on Saturday. The violence shook the tiny Tule River Indian Reservation, home to 800 residents and high poverty. Rhoda Hunter, tribal council secretary of the Tule River Indian Reservation, walks into Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church for Mass, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at the Tule River Indian Reservation in California. The church bell, its tower being renovated, has tolled throughout the day on Sunday to honor those killed in what many believe is the worst mass murder in tribal history. Hector Celaya, 31, is a suspect in shootings in which three people died and four others, including two young girls, were wounded Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, on the reservation in the Sierra foothills of California's Central Valley. Since 1933 the church bell has slowly tolled to alert tribal members when someone dies.

In this 2009 photo released by Steve Sillett, The President, a Giant Sequoia Tree, is shown in Sequoia National Park, Calif. After 3,240 years the Giant Sequoia is still growing wider at a consistent rate, which may be what most surprised the scientists examining how they and coastal redwoods will be impacted by climate change and whether they have a role to play in combatting it.
