White House Weekly: August 31

We begin on Friday, August 21st, President Trump attends the funeral of his brother, Robert Trump, who passed away on Saturday, August 15th, at the age of 71.

Saturday, August 22nd, President Trump calls out the FDA for slow-rolling clinical trials to allow drug companies to develop vaccines and therapies for the coronavirus, pinning the blame on the “deep state” attempting to thwart his re-election bid.

Sunday, August 23rd, Trump and the FDA announce that an emergency authorization is issued for the use of convalescent plasma to treat COVID-19 patients.

Meanwhile, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, who served as Trump’s campaign manager in the 2016 election, announces she’s leaving her position at the end of the month to focus on her family. Her husband, George Conway, who co-founded the NeverTrump super PAC, the Lincoln Project, states he’s stepping back from his roles for the same reason. The news comes as George and Kellyanne’s 16-year-old daughter, Claudia, tweets that she’s seeking emancipation from her parents.

Monday, August 24th, President Trump and Vice President Pence are officially nominated for re-election at the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Tuesday, August 25th, President Trump announces he’s promoting Chad Wolf, the acting DHS secretary, to hold a permanent, Senate-confirmed position to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Meanwhile, at the second night of the GOP convention, President Trump holds a naturalization ceremony to highlight America’s legal immigration system and First Lady Melania Trump gave the keynote speech, praising her husband and advocating for his re-election.

Wednesday, August 26th, Vice President Mike Pence delivers the keynote address and accepts the vice presidential nomination at the third night of the GOP convention, re-emphasizing that President Trump is the “law and order” candidate who can properly handle the unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin following the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Thursday, August 27th, after the NBA canceled several postseason games in response to the Blake shooting, President Trump blasts the organization for becoming “like a political organization.”

Later on, President Trump gets his time to shine at the GOP convention, delivering the keynote speech and accepting the presidential nomination on the final night, hitting Democratic nominee Joe Biden hard on his record from China and immigration to crime and his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Politically speaking, things couldn’t have gone much better for President Trump. That’s pretty much to be expected with the GOP convention. However, adding the unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin to the equation, it’s a sticking point that only helps Trump. Despite going through a disastrous June in handling the massive social unrest, he’s gained his footing and is looking to make a comeback in a race that Biden looked to have in the bag a month ago.
