‘Daddy’s on an important phone call’: Trudeau balancing single fatherhood with leading Canada while wife quarantined

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking care of three young children with little help while leading Canada during the coronavirus pandemic.

His wife Sophie has been in quarantine since she tested positive for the coronavirus. Trudeau and his family have self-isolated in their Ottawa home since March 12 after his wife came down with flu-like symptoms.

The prime minister has been taking care of his children alone, without the help of nannies or cleaners, while his wife is quarantined in another part of their home, the New York Times reported.

Meals have been dropped off at the house, as has a large box of Lego toys, but no one has entered their home to clean, do laundry, or watch the couple’s three children — Xavier, 12, Ella-Grace, 11, and Hadrien, 6 — while Trudeau is on calls with world leaders.

Ben Chin, the prime minister’s senior adviser, said Trudeau was late to a briefing because he had to give Hadrien a bath.

“You could hear the kids running around laughing and playing in the background and coming over saying, ‘Come on, Daddy, let’s do this,’” Chin said. “You heard the half-muffled reasonable dad voice: ‘Daddy’s on an important phone call right now. I can’t do that.’”

Trudeau’s daughter has become his official photographer, snapping photos of the prime minister working to share on social media.
