Election Primary Results: August 21, 2018
Wyoming voters head to the polls Tuesday to select major party nominees for governor. Businessman and investor Foster Friess received a late endorsement from President Trump and is considered the front-runner, however narrowly. But state Treasurer Mark Gordon is providing strong competition and both Sam Galeotos and Harriet Hageman are also in the race. The likeliest Democratic nominee is state Rep. Mary Throne.
Sen. John Barrasso has a Republican primary challenger in businessman David Dodson. This contest likely became less competitive once former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon abandoned his project of recruiting primary challengers against most incumbent Republican senators, but Dodson has spent $ 1 million so it is worth watching.
Liz Cheney does not face serious opposition in either the Republican primary or on the Democratic side for reelection to Wyoming’s only House seat.
Alaska will also choose candidates for the next governor. Former Sen. Mark Begich is the Democratic front-runner while Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and state Sen. Mike Dunleavy lead a crowded Republican field. The incumbent governor, Bill Walker, is an independent who is running for re-election.
Longtime Republican Rep. Don Young, Alaska’s sole House member, is a heavy favorite in both the primary and the general election. But progressive Dimitri Shein is vying with Alyse Galvin for the Democratic nomination to run against him.
