Vice President Mike Pence will headline a joint fundraiser in Indianapolis this month for top Republican Senate candidates Josh Hawley of Missouri and Mike Braun of Indiana.
The plans were revealed in an email to GOP donors from Pence’s political team one day after Braun secured the Republican nomination for Senate in Indiana, Pence’s home state — and after the vice president canceled a fundraiser for Hawley, the state attorney general and presumptive Senate nominee.
That event had been a scheduled for Wednesday in Missouri. Some Republican insiders are speculating that Pence does not want to travel to the state because of twin scandals that have engulfed Republican Gov. Eric Greitens. The state legislature, controlled by the GOP, could soon move to impeach Greitens.
Braun and Hawley are challenging two of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats of this election cycle. Braun is taking on Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Hawley is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri.
In the email to Republican contributors, Pence’s team said the planned May 18 joint-fundraiser in Indianapolis “would benefit the campaign committees of Indiana Senate Candidate Mike Braun and Missouri Senate Candidate Josh Hawley, along with the National Republican Senatorial Committee.”
