A neighbor of Rep. Veronica Escobar was found dead after a shooting over the weekend in El Paso, Texas.
Law enforcement was called to the scene on Saturday night, according to CBS News, and officers found a woman dead in her home while her 47-year-old husband was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. He is in stable condition.
Police have yet to identify any suspects or release a motive. A source told the outlet that Escobar was the one who called 911 to report a shooting.
“We are devastated and heartbroken,” Escobar, who has a shared driveway with the neighbors, told the outlet. “They are like family to us.”
The woman who was killed was identified as an attorney who worked with the state attorney general’s office. Her husband was also identified as an attorney.
Escobar, a Democrat who previously served as a county commissioner and then as a judge for El Paso County, joined Congress in January 2019. She and her husband Michael have two children, Cristian Diego and Eloisa Isabel, and they live in central El Paso, according to her website.
