Two-thirds of college students want to return to class this fall even without a coronavirus vaccine: Poll

College students are ready to get back to campus.

A poll from College Reaction found that two-thirds of college students want to resume in-person instruction in the fall, even if a vaccine is not available to the public. Nearly one-third, 31%, said they would prefer to continue online courses. Four percent of respondents said they would not return to school at all if a vaccine were not available this fall.

Many students have found they are less focused during online classes. Seventy-one percent of respondents reported they are more distracted by their cell phones than they would be in class. The same percentage said that they had been distracted by other things happening in their homes. Forty-five percent of students said they had skipped more classes because of remote learning.

Universities have been hesitant to reveal any plans for the fall semester after switching to online instruction because of the pandemic. On Tuesday, the California State University system announced that all courses would remain online for fall 2020.

The poll included answers from 835 college students and was conducted from May 8 to May 10. The margin of error was 3.4 percentage points.
