I have attended Sarah Lawrence College commencements for nearly 20 years, and I know what these ceremonies normally feel like — the college’s unique pedagogy means that commencements are often cathartic, inspiring, and uplifting. Even when speeches run long or weather intrudes, there is a recognizable emotional atmosphere on campus of relief, celebration, pride, laughter, and noise. Students hug each other. Families cry.
