James Comey’s book tour and media blitz have not swayed the public’s perception of the former FBI director or President Trump’s decision to fire him last year.
In June of 2017, just a month after Trump fired Comey, 55 percent of people polled disapproved of the move while 40 percent approved, and in an April 2018 survey conducted by SurveyMonkey and Axios, the results yielded the exact same numbers.
The survey said 56 percent of participants believe that Comey is doing interviews to promote himself and his book rather than reveal the truth about the Trump administration.
Comey’s favorability rating only jumped 1 percentage point after his highly publicized media appearances and book tour following the release of A Higher Loyalty on April 17.
On April 15, the first interview since the FBI director-turned-author was fired aired on ABC, and since then Comey has been doing media interviews regarding his time as FBI director under Trump and his tell-all memoir.
Despite his efforts, the portion of people who believe Comey over Trump is just 3 percent more than those who believe Trump over Comey, and 25 percent of the population still don’t believe either of them.
Comey, a lifelong Republican, has won over the Democrats by attacking Donald Trump both in his announcement of an investigation into Russian collusion between the Trump campaign, and his book detailing his tenure.
Only 8 percent of Republicans believe Comey over Trump, while 67 percent of Democrats trust Comey’s side of the story over the president’s.
