Apple is building a $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, as well as three more smaller satellite locations on the west coast.
The Austin campus is expected to employ 5,000 people working in engineering, research and development, operations, finance, sales, and computer support, the Associated Press reported.
The Texas city is already the second largest home to Apple employees outside of the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The 5,000 new employees will be added to the already 6,000 people that are employed by Apple in Austin.
“Apple has been a vital part of the Austin community for a quarter century, and we are thrilled that they are deepening their investment in our people and the city we love,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in a statement, according to the AP.
The three smaller campus, which will be in Seattle, Wash,, San Diego, Calif., and Culver City, Calif., will each initially hire more than 1,000 people.
In the longer term, Apple says it is planning to also expanding to Pittsburgh, Pa., New York, and Colorado.
The Apple announcement comes shortly after Amazon ended it’s 14-month search for a second headquarters.
Last month, the tech giant announced that it would be adding headquarters in both Long Island City, Queens, and Arlington, Va., each getting 25,000 employees.
