President Joe Biden celebrated the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, saying in a statement released Thursday that it was a “good day” for both Israel and the United States.

In the statement, Biden said he plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders soon to “congratulate them” and also discuss the way forward to release the hostages and end the war.

“There is now the opportunity for a ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.  Yahya Sinwar was an insurmountable obstacle to achieving all of those goals. That obstacle no longer exists. But much work remains before us,” Biden said.

Israel’s war in Gaza has created rifts in the Democratic Party over the Biden administration’s refusal to stop sending aid to Israel and the mass casualties in Gaza.
