The defense leaders of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are cautiously hopeful about working with former President Donald Trump should he win in November’s election.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas pointed to several decisions made during Trump’s first term in office as reasons to believe the alliance can come up with various agreements to benefit everyone despite his frequent criticism of the alliance.
In addition to a potential second Trump term, both the U.K. and France just had elections that could impact the alliance, though Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds said none of these pose a fundamental threat to the alliance, only a potential “change of approach.”
“We believe that NATO is indispensable for the United States,” he said.
