Freedom Caucus chairman says it would make ‘sense’ for North Carolina to give Trump electoral votes

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (R-MD) said on Thursday it would make a “lot of sense” for North Carolina’s state legislature to give Trump its 16 electoral votes, given the possible difficulties posed for voting in regions devastated by Hurricane Helene.

According to Harris, since the counties affected by the hurricane consist of a Republican majority, the state legislature should convene to declare a Trump victory.

“You statistically can go and say, ‘Look, you got disenfranchised in 25 counties. You know what that vote probably would have been,’” Harris said during an exchange with a speaker at the dinner. “Which would be, if I were in the legislature, enough to go, ‘Yeah, we have to convene the legislature. We can’t disenfranchise the voters.’”

Harris defended his comments in a statement obtained by the Washington Examiner on Friday, saying, “As I’ve repeatedly said, every legal vote should be counted. I would hope everyone could agree that legal American voters whose lives were devastated by the recent storms should not be disenfranchised in the upcoming voting process.”
