Lawmakers place their bets on Trump speech length
From David Sivak
Lawmakers are betting that Trump will outdo himself on Tuesday night when he delivers a State of the Union speech that he’s teased will be a long one.
“Everybody, use the restroom and get yourself ready, that’s what I’m saying,” said Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).
Trump broke the record last year when he delivered a 99-minute speech before a joint session of Congress, and lawmakers believe this year will be no different.
“I am very confident it’s going to go into triple digits tonight,” said Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY).
Roy predicted at least two hours, while Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA) joked that he’s mentally preparing himself for the possibility that it could stretch into Wednesday.
“Somebody asked me earlier if I was gonna stay for the whole thing, and I said, ‘It depends on what time after midnight it was over,’” Cline quipped.
Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) offered his prediction with a sign of exhaustion: “Unfortunately, two hours.”
But Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI), the House GOP conference chairwoman, was more chipper, guessing that Trump will match last year’s speech length.
“Oh my gosh, I’m gonna go with an hour 40,” she told the Washington Examiner.
Sen. Jim Banks (R-IN) is putting this speech in record territory, estimating 2 hours and 20 minutes, but also quibbled over when to start the stop clock.
“It’s a tough question, is that from opening word to final word? Is that all the pomp and circumstance beforehand?”
IRAN BUILDUP HANGS OVER TRUMP STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
The American Presidency Project, which measures the length of every address, says the clock starts when the president declares, “Mr. or Madam Speaker.”
Of the 10 longest speeches, Trump makes the cut four times. The same goes for former President Bill Clinton.
