One million early votes already cast in Georgia, setting new record
From Anna Giaritelli
Georgia voters have set a new record for early ballots cast in a midterm election cycle.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced on Tuesday afternoon that 1,007,015 votes had been cast as of noon local time.
“We continue to break records each day of early voting,” Raffensperger said in a statement. “This is evidence that Georgians trust our election process. The strong turnout reflects the work our 159 county election officials do to make our elections free, fair, and fast.”
The 1 million figure is 12% higher than the 894,412 Georgians who voted early in 2022, according to Raffensperger’s office.
Early voting in Georgia began on Oct. 13 and is available through Oct. 30.
More than 48,900 absentee ballots have also been accepted statewide as of noon Tuesday. Overall voter turnout stands at 1,055,931.
Georgia’s two biggest races are over the Senate and governor’s office. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat, is running against Republican billionaire businessman Rick Jackson in the gubernatorial race. Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) is seeking a second term and is pitted against Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA).
