Talk show icon Oprah Winfrey, a powerful celebrity and billionaire speaking at the Democratic National Convention, drew on late Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) in her unifying message to Democrats.
“No matter what ship our ancestors arrived on,” Winfrey quoted Lewis. “We are all on the same boat now.”
“The work will never be done because freedom isn’t free,” she said.
She also took a subtle swipe at Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), referencing his 2021 comments about “childless cat ladies.”
“When a house is on fire, we’re not asked about the homeowner’s race or religion. We don’t wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do the best we can save them. And if the place happens that belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out too,” she said.
But her largest applause line praised Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Very soon, we’re gonna be teaching our daughters and sons about how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, two idealistic, energetic [immigrants], grew up to become the 47th President of the United States!” she said to cheers.
