House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) denounced Biden’s comments on Tuesday suggesting supporters of Trump are “garbage,” claiming such a statement is “an insult to half of America.”
“You had the president of the United States, Joe Biden, denouncing half of the people of the United States of America, saying, ‘Anybody who supports President Trump is garbage,'” Scalise told the Washington Examiner. “Of course, Joe Biden is the person who said he was going to unite the country, and obviously, he’s failed to do that.”
Scalise drew a contrast to comments from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally earlier this week suggesting Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage,” noting that the former president “quickly denounced that.” Trump did not overtly denounce the comedian’s comment, instead saying he didn’t know who he was and that “it’s nobody’s fault. But somebody said something bad.”
“It wasn’t President Trump himself or some comedian that nobody had heard of. It was denounced by everybody involved,” Scalise said, later adding that “you don’t see Kamala denouncing” Biden’s comments.
