Trump received the endorsement of three local unions of U.S. Steel at a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening.

A member of a local union in the Mon Valley Works steel plant announced the endorsement in a short speech on the stage, during which he said Trump “saved” the steel industry with tariffs.

In 2018, Trump announced tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from every country except Canada and Mexico.

Trump has been laying out various tariff proposals on the campaign trail, most recently this week when in separate appearances before the Detroit Economic Club and the Economic Club of Chicago he defended his proposal to impose across-the-board tariffs of 10% on all imported goods.

Japan’s largest steelmaker, Nippon Steel, entered into an agreement to purchase U.S. Steel. The Biden administration extended its review of the purchase, and the deal will likely not be completed until after Election Day. Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), oppose the deal.
