Trump suggested a bill on Sunday at his rally at Madison Square Garden that would enforce a one-year prison sentence for those who burn the American flag.

“I would like to suggest that we put in a bill, if you burn the American flag, one year in jail,” he said.

Trump underscored pro-Palestinian protests in Washington as the motivation for the proposal.

“I would like to put forward a bill because I watched, two months ago, as some very bad people — radical Left people by the way, nothing happened to ’em — in Washington, D.C., burned our American flags,” he said.

Burning the American flag is protected under the First Amendment, dating back to the 1989 Supreme Court decision Texas v. Johnson.
