In a bilateral meeting as the United Nations General Assembly proceeded, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised President Donald Trump for working toward peace.

“We are entirely at your disposal to work together toward a just peace,” Guterres told Trump, adding that the United States is “essential” to the global body.

Trump responded warmly to the secretary-general’s comments, saying the United States is “behind the United Nations 100%.”

“I think the potential of the United Nations is incredible. Really incredible. It can do so much. I’m behind it. I may disagree with it sometimes, but I am so behind it,” he continued. “The potential for peace with this institution is so great. So I just want to thank you for treating us so lovely.”

Trump also made a comment about a broken escalator and an inoperable teleprompter during his address.

“It’s always an honor to be here, but this was more exciting with the escalator and teleprompter,” he said. “These things happen.”
