The chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia has called the GOP primary for the state’s 5th Congressional District in favor of state Rep. John McGuire, dealing a blow to House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-VA) in one of the most high-profile races of the 2024 cycle.
“The 5th Congressional District Republican Primary Election has now concluded, and I congratulate State Senator John McGuire on being the Republican nominee,” Chairman Rich Anderson said in a statement. “Further, I thank Congressman Bob Good for his service to the Commonwealth and country.”
Under state rules, Good has the option to request a recount because the margin of victory is under 1 percentage point. As of Monday at 8:54 p.m., McGuire led Good by just 0.6 points.
The state will certify its election results on July 2, after which Good will have 10 days to file a challenge. The Republican incumbent has indicated he will do so.
“As this process and the General Election move forward, we can all have confidence that the commonsense appointments to the Virginia Department of Elections and State Board of Elections over the last three years, along with Virginia’s exclusive use of paper ballots, will keep our elections secure,” Anderson said.
The race has not been called by the Associated Press.
