2025 elections live updates: Latest on races in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York

By Washington Examiner Staff

Updated 3:52 pm, November 4, 2025

Here's what we're covering
  • Voters in a handful of states are gearing up for Election Day in a slew of key races.
  • Virginia will elect its first female governor as voters choose between Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Voters in the commonwealth will also elect their next lieutenant governor, attorney general, and members of the House of Delegates.
  • Virginia’s race for attorney general was thrown into the spotlight after revelations that Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones sent texts in which he fantasized about murdering a fellow lawmaker and their children. Jones is facing off against Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, who is seeking reelection.
  • New Jerseyans will also select their next governor between former Republican Rep. Jack Ciatterelli and Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill.
  • New York City will decide its next mayor with three candidates left in the race: Democrat Zohran Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo — who is running as an independent — and Republican Curtis Silwa.

Democrats hope to get back into the win column in Tuesday’s elections, even if the party’s brand hasn’t recovered since last year’s losses.

Based on polling, Democrats have a decent shot. They are favored in the governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey. They are also heavily favored in the New York City mayoral election, in which the main alternative to their party’s nominee is former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing the primary earlier this year.

Virginia Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares has a reasonable chance to resist this blue trend, taking a slight lead in the polls since text messages revealed Democratic challenger Jay Jones’s violent fantasies about political opponents just weeks after the assassination of influential conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.

Jason Miyares celebrates split-ticket voters as Earle-Sears lags behind Spanberger

From Emily Hallas

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, engaged in a competitive battle for reelection, made an appeal to split-ticket voters on Tuesday as he seeks to gain last-minute support from undecided voters in the state.

Miyares posted a video of him meeting Dave, introduced as a voter in Stafford, who said he cast ballots both for the Republican attorney general and Abigail Spanberger, a former representative running on the Democratic ticket for governor against Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA).

“Dave’s splitting his ticket — you can too,” Miyares said, with just hours remaining for residents to cast votes.

Over 1 million voters have cast ballots in New York City on Election Day

From Molly Parks

Over 1 million New Yorkers have voted in the mayoral election as of noon on Tuesday, according to the New York City Board of Elections.

With a city of over 8.4 million people, about 1 in 8 people have checked in to vote this Election Day. These numbers include those who voted early, which was approximately 735,317 people.

Brooklyn is the borough with the most voters so far, garnering 395,674 votes as of noon on Tuesday. The Board of Elections accounted for 328,503 voters in Manhattan, 267,772 voters in Queens, 111,909 voters in the Bronx, and 82,504 voters in Staten Island so far.

There are approximately 4.7 million active registered voters in New York City, approximately 2.8 million of whom voted in the 2024 presidential election. About 1.15 million people cast a ballot in the 2021 mayoral election, according to CNN, less than the number of voters so far in this year’s race. Polls close at 9 p.m. in New York City on Tuesday.

Midtown East voting location sees pro-Cuomo supporters: ‘Zohran the moron’

From Keely Bastow, Ross O'Keefe

Two voters at New York City’s Midtown East polling location told the Washington Examiner why they are supporting Cuomo.

Vera Whitmore, 57, said she’s voting for Cuomo, “Because I know Andrew Cuomo can get any job done.”

She said her choice had a lot to do with the candidates’ level of experience.

“I hope he will,” she said. “I hope he does for the state of our city. I know this is a big city, and it has a lot of issues, and you need somebody who knows what the hell they’re doing. I don’t go for novice.”

Another voter, who declined to give her name, said she voted for Cuomo because she did not want “Zohran the moron to be a communist mayor of New York City.”

However, she added that Cuomo will “probably not” win.

Voters in the neighborhood supported Cuomo with 39.9% in the primary, compared to 32.3% for Mamdani.

How quickly states will count ballots on Election Day

From David Zimmermann

As voters head to polling sites across the nation on Election Day, it remains to be seen how quickly the states holding the most prominent races will count their ballots. But past elections in those states may help shed some light on when voters can expect to see the final election results.

The outcome of Virginia’s gubernatorial race may likely be determined on election night, with Spanberger and Earle-Sears challenging each other for the position. The results could come within a few hours after the polls close at 7 p.m. In 2021, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin was declared the victor around 12:30 a.m.

The races for Virginia lieutenant governor, attorney general, and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates will likely need more time to be called.

In New Jersey, polls close at 8 p.m. The state’s race for governor has remained a dead heat between Sherrill and Ciattarelli, indicating the race won’t be called on election night unless one candidate brings a larger turnout of votes. During the last gubernatorial election in 2021, Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) narrowly won reelection one day after the polls closed.

New York City’s polling locations close at 9 p.m. Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa are all vying for the mayor’s office in the city’s closest general election in 16 years. There’s a chance the race may not be called quickly on election night. Mamdani has consistently maintained a strong lead, although Cuomo has closed the gap between himself and the front-runner.

California is poised to take the longest to count all votes, given its widespread use of mail-in ballots. The state has a Democrat-led redistricting ballot measure up for a vote in the special election. Results won’t likely come in until days later, but it’s possible the measure will pass by a healthy margin.

Senate vote for GOP government funding bill fails on Election Day

From David Zimmermann

Senate Democrats once again blocked Republicans’ stopgap funding bill on Election Day, marking the 14th time the measure has failed to pass the upper chamber.

The final tally was 54 votes in favor to 44 votes opposed. Republicans need at least 60 votes to advance the bill that would fund the federal government through Nov. 21.

Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Angus King (I-ME) all voted with Republicans in favor of the legislation. Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) joined Democrats in opposing the measure.

Now that the latest Senate vote has failed, the shutdown is poised to become the longest in the nation’s history. During his first term, Trump oversaw the longest shutdown, which lasted 35 days. Wednesday will mark Day 36 of the current government shutdown.

Unaffiliated voters forced to vote on provisional ballots in Pennsylvania county

From Molly Parks

Third-party voters in Chester County, Pennsylvania, were out of luck when they arrived at polling locations on Tuesday morning, as a county problem omitted their names from the poll books.

The unaffiliated voters were turned away from in-person booths. Chester County Voter Services told the independent voters to instead cast their votes on provisional ballots while the county worked to fix the problem.

“Voter Services is in the process of sending supplemental poll books to all polling locations,” the Chester County Voter Services website reads. “Until those supplemental poll books are delivered, any registered voter whose name does not appear in the poll book may vote provisionally.”

Chester County citizens are casting their ballots Tuesday in several local elections and for the statewide Supreme Court retention questions. The county has 385,856 registered voters, of which 75,076 are independent, according to NBC10.

Cuomo apologizes for COVID-19 nursing home deaths: ‘It was on my watch’

From David Zimmermann

Cuomo apologized directly to the families affected by his pandemic-era policies that admitted coronavirus-positive patients into nursing homes, endangering the lives of elderly people.

“Nobody knew what we were dealing with,” he said Tuesday morning on Fox & Friends. “I had the best health experts from around the globe giving us advice. We followed the best advice. We followed the federal guidance, and people died in a horrific way.”

“There were no visitors allowed into nursing homes, and I apologize for any family that lost a loved one during that time,” he added. “It was on my watch, and I understand how terrible it was.”

Cuomo’s remarks represent his strongest statement in terms of taking accountability for the nursing home scandal that led to more than 13,000 deaths in 2020.

As an independent candidate, the former Democratic governor faces Mamdani and Sliwa in New York’s mayoral election on Tuesday.

Silwa puts the red beret back on for Election Day

From Molly Parks

Sliwa is donning his signature red beret for Election Day, returning to his roots as New York voters cast their ballots to name the city’s next mayor.

The Republican candidate sported the headwear as he spoke to poll workers at Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx, according to the New York Times. Sliwa has ditched the hat in recent appearances in an attempt to show his serious commitment to his run for office.

Sliwa has worn the red beret since the 1970s as a symbol of his crime prevention group, the Guardian Angels. He has taken some heat for wearing the beret during the campaign — most recently from President Donald Trump, who made an eleventh-hour endorsement for Cuomo on Monday evening.

“We must also remember this — A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Schumer silent on who he voted for in NYC mayoral election

From David Zimmermann

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has not endorsed any candidate in New York’s mayoral election, but he did vote early.

It remains unclear for whom the top Senate Democrat voted after he declined to hand out a last-minute endorsement. He may address this topic later on Tuesday during an afternoon press conference about the government shutdown.

Schumer took the opposite approach of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who endorsed Mamdani despite his initial reluctance to weigh in on the race.

Voters in a New Jersey county turned away as voting machines are down

From David Zimmermann

Voters in Cumberland County, New Jersey, are being turned away at polling locations as the voting machines are down.

Michael Rothman, mayor of Downe Township in southern New Jersey, explained the problem in a video released by conservative influencer Scott Presler. In the video, he pleaded for help to solve the problem.

“Anything that can be done, any attention that’s put on this matter is greatly appreciated. But we are right now in the middle of everything that’s wrong with this system,” Rothman said.

The malfunctioning voting machines come at an inopportune time as voters head to the polls across New Jersey on Tuesday. The state has also seen bomb threats targeting its polling locations across seven counties.

Cuomo cast his ballot in New York’s mayoral election shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, expressing optimism that he may be able to beat Mamdani based on the record voter turnout.

“I’m feeling very good,” Cuomo said one day after Trump endorsed him against Mamdani. “I feel the momentum is on our side.”

“I can tell you this, I voted a lot of times, first time I ever walked into a polling place and the polling place cheered for me,” he added. “That’s a good sign. And the record turnout is a good sign.”

More than 735,000 people cast ballots during the early voting period from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2. Just three hours into voting on Election Day, nearly 200,000 voters turned out to polling locations in the city.

Sherrill cast a ballot for herself in New Jersey’s gubernatorial race on Election Day at an elementary school in Montclair.

She is challenging Ciattarelli, who was endorsed by Trump. The Democratic candidate holds a single-digit lead against the Republican nominee as the race tightens.

Both candidates condemned bomb threats that targeted multiple polling locations across seven counties in New Jersey. The threats are believed to be unfounded so far.

Like Sherrill, Mamdani voted for himself in New York’s mayoral election Tuesday morning.

Pro-Cuomo super PAC shows Mamdani in front of Twin Towers attack in ad

From David Zimmermann

A pro-Cuomo super PAC released an ad on Monday attacking Mamdani over the socialist’s ties to left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who once said “America deserved 9/11.”

“That’s Zohran’s buddy Hasan Piker saying we deserved 9/11. It’s a disgrace to every life lost,” the narrator says in a 15-second ad paid by For Our City, with Mamdani superimposed in front of the Twin Towers attack at one point. “Zohran went on Piker’s show, and now Piker was just spotted at Zohran’s event. Mamdani is wrong for New York.”

Mamdani appeared alongside Piker in April when the Democratic mayoral primary was underway.

Piker made the contentious remark about 9/11 during a 2019 livestream. Shortly thereafter, he said his own statement was “inappropriate” and suggested he intended it to be satire.

More recently, Mamdani claimed that his Muslim aunt was a victim of the 9/11 terrorist attack because others looked at her strangely for wearing a hijab. He did not mention the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

The front-runner’s comments were widely criticized by conservatives, including Vice President JD Vance.
