Twitter is not real life

Like much of the media, Twitter has become a hellish ideological echo chamber to be avoided.

A recent NBC News poll found that Twitter is full of leftists who are so out of touch with the rest of the country that they think President Joe Biden is doing a good job. Indeed, 57% of Twitter users said they approve of Biden’s handling of current issues. Meanwhile, Biden’s national approval rating has dropped to 38%.

It won’t come as much of a surprise to those who spend any amount of time on the website, but it is remarkable just how far to the left the average Twitter user leans. More Twitter users, for example, preferred Sens. Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren to Biden during the 2020 primary season, the poll found. They are also more likely than the average U.S. citizen to believe that black people are treated less fairly than white people and that barriers exist in a society that makes it harder for women to get ahead.

Yet, these are the users influencing news cycles that sometimes trickle down into actual government policy.

Twitter has its perks, but it is not representative of real life in any meaningful way. The average person is much more nuanced than the average Twitter user — and probably more thoughtful too. Maybe that’s a sign we should all log off the platform for good.
