Our friends at the Washington Post issued new guidance for reporters last week clarifying who can and cannot get pregnant.
“If we say pregnant women, we exclude those who are transgender and nonbinary,” the memo, temporarily posted on Instagram before it was made private, read. “If you are dealing with a situation in which you know the people identify as women, then you can appropriately use the phrase, pregnant woman or pregnant women. In other situations, to be more inclusive, use pregnant women and other pregnant individuals.”
“Pregnant individuals.” In other words, according to the Washington Post, men can now get pregnant.
Unfortunately, it does not seem that certain New York Times columnists or members of the progressive caucus got the message.
The day after a House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on abortion, New York Times columnist Charles Blow wrote a column titled “If men needed abortions” in which he wrote, “The law passed in Texas banning most abortions after the first six weeks of a pregnancy, before many women even know that they are pregnant, is an outrage and an offense. … If men were the ones who got pregnant, this would never have happened. Men wouldn’t stand for it.” Congressional Progressive Caucus Chairwoman Pramila Jayapal then eagerly quote-tweeted Blow’s “If men were the ones who got pregnant” line.
Well, we have good news for Blow and Jayapal. According to the Washington Post, men can get pregnant! So, now everyone, both men and women, can have an opinion about when life begins!
Joking aside, the Left’s refusal to acknowledge the science of biology will continue to undermine decades of its own messaging on women’s issues. We saw it earlier last month when the American Civil Liberties Union tweeted out an old quote from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg about abortion — except that every mention of the word “woman” had been changed to “person.”
We are not experts in gender studies. But it’s not all that good for women when progressive activists can’t even allow their heroes to use the word “woman.”
