The Trump administration on Friday announced a new set of sanctions against 38 individuals and entities in Russia in response to a “consistent pattern of malign activities” by the Russian government.
Among those sanctioned are seven Russian oligarchs, including Oleg Deripaska; Kirill Shamalov, the former son-in-law of Russian president Vladimir Putin; Alexey Miller, the chairman of Russian energy company Gazprom; Viktor Zolotov, the director of the national guard of Russia; and a state-owned weapons-training company.
Senior administration officials said Friday morning the actions have been taken in response to a host of Russian activity, including interference in U.S. elections, the Russian incursion in Crimea, and the propping up of the Assad regime in Syria. “Actions have consequences. Today’s actions are a result of a decision the Russian government has made . . . in choosing a path of confrontation,” said an administration official. “Today’s actions are the result of Russian government decisions.”
