Trump Sees Polling Bump after Hitting August Low-Point

After a months-long slide in the polls, President Trump has enjoyed a small bounce-back so far in September.

The latest data came Wednesday in a Politico/Morning Consult poll, which shows Trump up to 43 percent from his nadir in August of 39 percent. From Politico:

Some polls suggest Trump’s slight bump is the result of Republicans and some independents coming home. In this week’s POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, Trump was at 80 percent approval among Republican voters — up from 73 percent at his low-water mark. Among independents, Trump has bounced 5 percentage points, from 35 percent to 40 percent. Trump’s approval rating was virtually unchanged among Democratic voters, however. “Trump’s post-Charlottesville plunge proved to be short-lived, and his approval has stabilized,” said Morning Consult Co-founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp. “A key driver of this movement appears to be independents. Immediately after Charlottesville, 35 percent of independent voters approved of Trump, and 58 percent disapproved. In this latest poll, that has risen to 40 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval.”

The 43 percent figure matches Trump’s standing in the latest Economist/YouGov poll—the best top-line figure for the president in a major poll since June, per the RealClearPolitics average.

Trump also ticked up Tuesday to 39 percent in Gallup’s daily tracking poll, his highest result in that survey since July. The RCP average shows the president at 40 percent overall.

The bump comes on the heels of three weeks in which the Trump administration led a well-received response to two hurricanes and began to deal with congressional Democrats on multiple issues, including a government spending impasse.

August saw the president’s widely criticized response to white supremacist-led violence in Charlottesville and his repeated heckling of Republican leaders.
