Remember that question pollster Frank Luntz asked a few months ago about President Clinton — the one that asked, “Would you want your son or daughter to grow up and be like him?” Seventy-two percent said no. Well, we asked Luntz to broaden the question: If you had your choice, would you rather your child grow up and be like Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Bill Clinton, AlGore, Hillary Clinton, or Bob Dole? The winner, in Luntz’s national survey the last week of September, was Powell at 26 percent. The other preferences were Hillary (10 percent), Gore and Dole (both 8), Clinton (7), Gingrich (6), and don’t know (36). Sorry, Newt; maybe they read Connie Bruck’s hatchet job on you in last week’s New Yorker — an article remarkable in the annals of political journalism for its astounding, breathtaking illiteracy about the workings of Washington and Congress.
