Democrats Say They Have an Agreement With Trump on DACA, Without a Wall

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi came away from their Wednesday White House dinner with a simple message: President Donald Trump is ready to reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and he doesn’t mind not getting a border wall in return.

“We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President,” the Democratic congressional leaders said in a statement. “We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”

It’s not immediately clear from this statement how far from his campaign messaging Trump has strayed in this latest agreement with Democrats. Republican officials have long argued that strong enforcement on the U.S.-Mexico border requires a more nuanced approach than a coast-to-coast border wall. But what kind of border security agreement might be “acceptable to both sides” remains to be seen.

The Washington Post and other outlets reported Wednesday night that the White House was not necessarily in alignment with Democrats’ statement: From the Post:

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that DACA and border security were discussed but she said excluding border wall funding from a package deal was “certainly not agreed to.”
