Fact Check: Did Oprah Say ‘All White People Have to Die’?

After Oprah Winfrey’s explosive Golden Globes speech, the internet has been abuzz with Oprah-related chatter, attracting fake news and false information.

Multiple articles claiming that Oprah said some variation of “white people just have to die” have popped up throughout Facebook, gaining clicks and speculation.

Websites such as American News, The Peoples Truth, and Patriot Newswire have posted articles claiming Oprah said “all white people have to die,” “white older people have to die,” or similar sentiments.

(The site USA News Insider went so far as to accuse Oprah of saying “Yes, I am a racist, I hate white people and some white people have to die.”)

What’s the truth?

The original and accurate quote botched and manipulated in these articles comes from a 2013 BBC interview with Oprah, as Snopes points out in its fact check on the matter.

When discussing racism against black people and the progress that has been made, the interviewer asks Oprah if she believes the problem of racism has been solved. She replied:

I’m saying problem not solved. I’m saying that, you know, that’s the beauty of a film like The Butler, and it’s the beauty of a film like 12 Years a Slave, and it’s the beauty of what we’re seeing, you know, on stage with Scottsboro Boys is that it allows people to see where the root of the problem started. It allows people to see, ‘Oh, that’s where it all started, this is how far we’ve come, and now this is how much farther we need to go.’ Of course problem is not solved. As long as people can be judged by the, by the color of their skin, the problem’s not solved. As long as there are people who still… And there’s a whole generation, I said this for apartheid South Africa, I said this for my own, you know, community in the South, there are still generations of people, older people, who were born and bred and marinated in it, in that prejudice and racism, and they just have to die.

Oprah did not say “all while people have to die,” “white older people have to die,” or “Yes, I am a racist, I hate white people and some white people have to die.”
