Anne Arundel police target dangerous intersections

The recent deaths of four Anne Arundel residents in car crashes have prompted county police to increase enforcement at dangerous intersections.

“We?re concentrating on intersections where there are frequent violations,” said Sgt. John Gilmer, police spokesman.

“The [crashes] occurred in several different parts of the county, and we haven?t seen any patterns, but if there is a pattern, action will be taken.”

Police began “aggressively monitoring and enforcing” traffic violations Thursday at 10 intersections where 20 percent of accidents have occurred. The operation will run through Sept. 30.

Anne Arundel police said speed was a factor in two crashes; state police are probing road rage in the third.

Most recently, Jamel Cross, 19, of Lanham, died as a passenger in a 2007 Scion that sped through a stop sign Wednesday at the 7600 block of West Baltimore-Annapolis Road in Severn, police said.

Driver Michael Sweeny, 23, of Odenton and another passenger Charleigh Marie Poulin, 21, also of Odenton, were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore City. Sweeny was in serious but stable condition, while Poulin remained critical Friday.

Less than a week earlier, Joseph Norfolk, 23, of Glen Burnie, was killed on Route 10 at Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard when he slammed into a Ford Contour that stopped suddenly.

State police initially said Jason Wise, 24, of Baltimore City, was driving the Ford, but recently learned Bobbi Steiner, 25, also of Baltimore City, was driving. Four-month old Jeremiah Wise was in the backseat, police said.

Witnesses told police Norfolk and Wise had an altercation prior to the crash.

In the same week, driver Rebecca Moore, 23, and passenger Keira Mosaid, 19, both of Crofton, were killed when a 2007 Hyundai Accent crashed into several trees on Davidsonville Road in Gambrills, Anne Arundel police said.
