FEC: More than 300 Trump donors blew past donation limits

The Federal Election Commission is questioning $1.3 million in donations to President-elect Trump’s campaign, including money that may have come from unregistered groups, and overly large donations from individuals.

According to a letter sent Monday, the FEC is asking for information that amounts to full public disclosure of the campaign’s finances. If the Trump camp doesn’t comply, the campaign may be audited, the letter stated.

According to the letter, Trump received 13 donations from unregistered organizations. The campaign received excessive donations from more than 300 donors during the general election. Donations in excess of $2,700 cannot be given directly to a campaign.

The letter said the Trump campaign issued refunds to four donors that were actually greater than the amount the donors gave the campaign. It also noted that Trump Organization employee and top aide Boris Epshteyn did not itemize his in-kind contributions to the campaign on its financial disclosure forms.

The letter covers the donations from the period between Sept. 1 and Sept. 20.

All told, there are about 1,100 errors on the campaign finance sheet turned in by the Trump campaign, according to the letter.
