Silicon Valley-backed super PAC to spend $100M on TV ads for Biden

A super PAC backed by wealthy technology executives in California’s Silicon Valley plans to spend more than $100 million on television advertising during the final days of the presidential campaign to help Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

The Democratic-aligned group, Future Forward, waited to hit the airwaves until October, believing it could have the biggest impact during the final month of the campaign. Strategists for the super PAC also believe they can do the most good for Biden by running mostly positive spots versus ads that sharply criticize Trump.

Dustin Moskovitz, the co-founder of Facebook, has contributed “at least” $22 million to Future Forward, according to Recode, which first reported the story. More than just being one of the group’s largest donors, Moskovitz is a key figure in driving its advertising strategy. Meanwhile, Future Forward could spend $28 million supporting M.J. Hegar, the Democrat who is challenging Republican Sen. John Cornyn in Texas.

Future Forward raised $66 million from Sept. 1 through Oct. 15. The group’s fundraising report was not yet available on the Federal Election Commission’s website. But Recode reports that the super PAC’s donors include Twilio founder Jeff Lawson and his wife Erica, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and cryptocurrency trader Sam Bankman-Fried, among others.

Biden is not the only presidential contender who is getting late help from a friendly super PAC with wealthy backers. Preserve America launched in late August to help Trump compete with the Democratic nominee. The Republican super PAC was the beneficiary of $75 million in contributions from GOP megadonors Sheldon and Miriam Adelson.
