Mayor-elect Vince Gray is expected to announce later Thursday that he will keep Cathy Lanier as the District’s police chief.
The move comes as no surprise. At 80 percent, Lanier has the highest approval rating of any city official. Under her watch the number of the city’s homicides have dropped to lows not seen in more than two decades.
Keeping Lanier is also the latest of several signals Gray has sent to show the public that his administration won’t seek to undo what some believe were the key successes of Mayor Adrian Fenty’s tenure. Kaya Henderson, who served as the number two to former D.C. schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, will stay on through the school year. Gray has also picked a top Fenty official, Allen Lew, as his city administrator.
