Klobuchar accuses Bloomberg of using money 'to hide behind airwaves'

Sen. Amy Klobuchar ripped into fellow 2020 Democrat Michael Bloomberg for attempting to avoid the Democratic presidential debates.

“I think he has to come on a show like yours here, Dana,” the Minnesota Democrat told CNN on Sunday. “He has not gone on any Sunday show since he announced.

She added, “I don’t think you should be able to hide behind airwaves and huge ad buys. He has to come on these shows, and I also am an advocate for him coming on the debate stage. I know I’m not going to be able to beat him on the airwaves, but I can beat him on the debate stage.”

Klobuchar’s comments came in response to CNN’s Dana Bash asking her about alleged sexist comments the former New York City mayor made throughout his business career.

Bloomberg has avoided qualifying for the Democratic presidential debates by spending his own money and refusing to solicit donations. Instead, he has spent millions of dollars on ads to get his messaging out. However, a recent rule change from the Democratic National Committee could pave the way for him to make the debate stage.

Both Klobuchar and Bloomberg have seen their campaigns’ profiles rise in recent weeks as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden have underperformed in the first two states that have voted in the Democratic presidential primary.
