Macy’s temporarily closes all stores amid coronavirus pandemic

Macy’s said it will be closing all stores until the end of March to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

The clothing and apparel company released a statement on Tuesday saying it would close all stores until March 31. The shutdown also includes subsidiaries such as Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, later noting that “Macy’s, Inc. will provide benefits and compensation to its impacted workforce.”

“The health and safety of our customers, colleagues, and communities is our utmost priority. As a result of the recent COVID-19 developments, we have decided to temporarily close our stores. We will work with government and health officials to assess when we will reopen our stores and safely bring our colleagues back to work,” said Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette.

“During this closure, we will continue to serve our customers through our e-commerce sites,” he continued.

The news follows Nordstrom’s announcement on Monday night that it would close stores for the next two weeks, also guaranteeing workers all wages and benefits.

“The health and safety of our customers and employees remain our top priority as we continue to make decisions during this rapidly evolving situation. We’re taking decisive actions across the business to help protect employees, customers, and others in the communities we serve,” said CEO Erik Nordstrom in prepared remarks.
